Land Rover 88 Parts List —
Series 1, 2 & 3 Short Wheelbase

Published 25 June 2026 · Two Max Engineering

The Land Rover 88-inch short wheelbase was the backbone of the classic Land Rover range, produced in Series 1 (from 1954), Series 2, Series 2A and Series 3 variants up to 1985. This guide lists the major parts sections, explains which parts are shared across Series and which are model-specific, and shows you how to find the exact part number for your 88-inch Land Rover.

Land Rover 88-inch — Model History

The 88-inch wheelbase replaced the 86-inch in 1954 and remained the standard short wheelbase for the entire classic Land Rover era. Three distinct Series used the 88-inch platform:

  • Series 1 — 88 inch (1954–1958): 2.0 litre petrol engine, early transfer box design, sliding-mesh then synchromesh gearbox (from 1955)
  • Series 2 — 88 inch (1958–1961): 2.25 litre petrol engine, new gearbox, revised body with deeper front wings
  • Series 2A — 88 inch (1961–1971): 2.25 litre petrol or diesel engine, updated electrical system, forward-control option
  • Series 3 — 88 inch (1971–1985): 2.25 litre petrol or diesel, all-synchromesh gearbox (LT77 from 1983), revised dashboard, updated axles

Main Parts Sections — Land Rover 88 Parts List

The following sections cover all the major assemblies in the Land Rover 88-inch. The Two Max Engineering Parts Viewer provides interactive diagrams and official part numbers for each of these sections across all Series:

1. Engine

Series 1 88-inch: 2.0 litre OHV petrol (part numbers in 500,000–600,000 range). Series 2, 2A and 3 88-inch: 2.25 litre OHV petrol or diesel. Key engine sub-sections:

  • Cylinder block assembly (block, liners, pistons, rings)
  • Cylinder head (valves, guides, springs, rockers, gasket)
  • Crankshaft, main bearings and big-end bearings
  • Timing gear (chain, sprockets, tensioner, cover)
  • Lubrication (oil pump, filter, sump, breather)
  • Cooling system (water pump, thermostat, radiator, hoses)
  • Fuel system (carburettor, fuel pump, air cleaner, fuel tank)
  • Exhaust manifold and downpipe

2. Clutch

  • Flywheel and starter ring gear
  • Clutch pressure plate and friction plate
  • Release bearing and fork
  • Clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder

3. Gearbox

The gearbox changed significantly across the Series. Series 1 88-inch used an early synchromesh box from 1955; Series 2 and 2A used the four-speed with synchromesh on 2nd, 3rd and 4th; Series 3 introduced all-synchromesh from the outset.

  • Main gearbox casing and bearings
  • Input shaft, layshaft, mainshaft
  • Selector forks and rods
  • Gear lever assembly and rubber gaiters

4. Transfer Box

  • Transfer box casing, bearings and shafts
  • High/low range selectors
  • Differential lock (where fitted)
  • Front and rear output flanges and oil seals
  • Intermediate propshaft (connecting gearbox to transfer box)

5. Front Axle

One of the most distinctive features of the Land Rover — the front axle uses a swivel housing with hub reduction on all Series. Parts are largely shared from Series 1 (1954) through to Series 3.

  • Axle casing and differential
  • Swivel housing (upper and lower swivel pins / king pins)
  • Hub reduction unit and bearings
  • Half-shafts (inner and outer)
  • Stub axle and hub assembly
  • Swivel housing and stub axle oil seals

6. Rear Axle

  • Rear axle casing (banjo type)
  • Crown wheel and pinion
  • Differential and side gears
  • Half-shafts and bearings
  • Rear hub and brake drum assembly
  • Pinion seal and half-shaft oil seals

7. Propshafts

  • Front propshaft (transfer box to front axle)
  • Rear propshaft (transfer box to rear axle)
  • Universal joints (front and rear, each end)
  • Propshaft flange bolts and straps

8. Steering

Series 1 and 2 use a Burman recirculating-ball steering box; Series 3 fitted Adwest power-assisted as an option. Manual steering parts:

  • Steering box and seals
  • Steering column and universal joint
  • Drop arm (pitman arm)
  • Drag link and ball joints
  • Track rod and track rod ends
  • Steering wheel

9. Suspension and Springs

  • Front and rear leaf springs
  • Spring shackles and pins
  • Shock absorbers (telescopic from Series 3)
  • Front and rear bump stops

10. Brakes

  • Brake master cylinder
  • Front and rear wheel cylinders
  • Brake shoes, drums and hardware
  • Handbrake mechanism (transmission drum on early models)
  • Brake pipes and flexible hoses

11. Body — 88-inch Short Wheelbase

The 88-inch body is shorter than the 109 and uses specific bulkhead, tub and door configurations. Key body parts:

  • Bulkhead assembly and repair panels
  • Door panels, hinges and check straps
  • Windscreen frame, glass and rubber seal
  • Side and rear tub panels
  • Hood frame and canvas hood
  • Rear door or tailgate (depending on variant)
  • Front wings (early Series 1 style vs. later deeper-wing style)

12. Electrical

  • Wiring loom (model-specific to year and specification)
  • Dynamo or alternator (later Series 3)
  • Starter motor and solenoid
  • Distributor, points, condenser and cap
  • Lights (headlamps, sidelamps, tail lamps)
  • Switches, gauges and instruments
  • Battery and battery carrier

Parts That Are Shared Across All 88-inch Series

Many running gear parts are shared between Series 1 (1954 onwards), Series 2 and Series 3 88-inch models. This makes sourcing easier, as later vehicles were produced in higher volumes. Shared parts include:

  • Swivel housing and swivel pin assembly
  • Hub reduction unit components
  • Leaf spring designs (similar but check dimensions)
  • Wheel and tyre fitment (6.00×16 cross-ply on early models)
  • Many brake hardware components

How to Find Your 88-inch Part Number

The fastest way to confirm a part number is the interactive parts manual. Select your exact model (e.g. Series 1 — 88 inch), navigate to the relevant section and click the component in the diagram to see the Rover part number, current availability status and any superseded replacement numbers.

You can also use the parts search to search by keyword, description or part number across all vehicles simultaneously.
